Simple steps to prevent a burglary

Most people are under the impression that home security is something they cannot afford or do not need at all.

I have to admit that there are situations that this might be true.

If you live on the 60^th story of a skyscraper and you have a security guard at the door there is no need for any home security product.

Unfortunately most of us do not live in these luxury circumstances.

Most of us live in a normal house or apartment that has no security guard.

That means that there are opportunities for burglary and or even worse a home invasion.

I don’t know about you, but to me it seems that I hear more and more about burglaries on the news.

According to some specialist this has to do with the bad economy and the high unemployment rates.

Let us talk about the point that people think that home security is expensive.

I cannot look in your wallet and do not know your financials, but just by talking to people I think I can come to the conclusion that a lot of people think that you need to pay a monthly fee to a security company and have a whole security system installed.

This is of course an option, but you have to wonder yourself if this is what you need in your situation.

If you read the statistics than you know that an average burglary takes about 8 minutes.

I always wonder if any security company can promise me that in that time the police will be at my house and will get the bad guys. To be honest I have my doubts about that.

I had 2 burglaries in my business and both times the thieves were gone before the police arrived.

I know that our law enforcement guys are busy and do not blame them at all.

This means that I speak out of personal experience. On time I even got there before the police.

But I think there is a difference between a business and a home.

In your home they know what en where to look for.

Most people have their valuable items in the same places.

Here is another fact that I found.

There are 2 kind of burglaries.

• Planned
• Opportunity

I do not know the exact numbers but many burglaries are planned by watching you and you home for a while.

They try to find out you routine and then decide to go for it or not.

The second one is just the opportunity of an open window, open car door or just pure luck to walk in to something and take advantage of the situation.

Although we can do something about the second one and try to avoid giving an opportunity this is something we cannot always avoid.

Our house or business is something else. We can do a lot to prevent being the victim of a burglary without spending a fortune.

We all can just have a look at our house and decide for ourselves where it is easy to get in and out our house without being seen of maybe even heard.

After all that is what any burglar like. Getting in and out:

• Easy
• Not being heard
• Not being seen.

If we realize that most of the times they use a door or window to get in we can use this fact to increase our home security plan.

A simple door or window alarm can already make a big difference. Remember that most burglars watch our house for a while and when they see any security device they will look fan an easier target.
